By 1650 the Utes had acquired horses and were among the first Native Cultures to master them. Horses transformed the Utes from hunter-gatherers traveling in small groups into large bands that moved easily over hundreds of miles - making the Utes the most feared and powerful tribe in Western Colorado & Utah. Area Petroglyphs depicting horses are dated post 1650. The War Chief is in North-Eastern Utah.
