The original Denver & Rio Grand Western was the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railway, which constructed a narrow gauge line from Grand Junction to Provo, Utah in 1881. The Denver & Rio Grande Western Railway was restructured and renamed as the Rio Grande Western Railway (RGW) in 1889 as part of a re-financing plan to upgrade the main line to standard gauge. A merger between the RGW and the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad was finalized in 1908, creating a standard gauge main line from Denver to Provo. The Denver & Rio Grande Railroad later became the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad in 1920.
