The ‘flying’ Rio Grande was one of many classic logos used throughout the long history of the Denver & Rio Grande Western (D&RGW) Railroad. The D&RGW was the epitome of high-mountain narrow gauge railroading. “Main Line thru the Rockies” and “Scenic Line of the World” were among its many colorful slogans. The D&RGW was originally founded in 1870 as the Denver & Rio Grande Railway. The ‘flying’ Rio Grande logo was introduced in 1941, and was in use on narrow gauge locomotives and rolling stock until the D&RGW shuttered that division in 1968.
