The Denver & Rio Grande (D&RG) Railway was founded in 1870 as a narrow gauge line planned to run from Denver south to El Paso, TX. By the time the construction of the main line had reached Pueblo, the riches of the gold, silver, and coal mines in the Colorado mountains enticed the D&RG Railway to build westward. After the D&RG Railway went into receivership in 1884, the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad was formed to take over the property and holdings. By 1918 the D&RG Railroad was also bankrupt. The newly formed Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad (D&RGW) purchased all assets in 1920. Steam locomotives reigned over the D&RGW narrow gauge division until it was shuttered in 1968. The D&RG Railway / Railroad never did reach El Paso.
Our sticker was inspired by the hand-drawn lettering on the cover of the October, 1913 public time-table for the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad.
