Baldwin Locomotive Works (BLW) was the leading manufacturer of steam locomotives for decades. During their zenith from about 1860 to 1940, BLW produced thousands of steam locomotives - both narrow gauge and standard gauge - for railroads all over the world. Almost all of the railroads in our Colorado Railways Collection used locomotives built by BLW. One of the most notable series of narrow gauge locomotives built by BLW was the K-36 class Mikados of the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad. Manufactured in 1925, nine of the original fleet of 10 engines (numbered 480 - 489) are still in operation on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railway and the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. Founded in 1825 in Philadelphia, PA by Mathais Baldwin, BLW went out of business in 1956.
